Dr Lucy McGowan
B.D.S. (Lpool) MJDF (Eng)
From a young age, I’ve always had a keen interest in dentistry, following in the footsteps of my mum and eldest sister who are also both dentists. I began working as a dental assistant at my mum’s practice in Ireland from the age of 16 years old, which led me to choosing dentistry as a career.
I graduated from Liverpool University Dental School (UK) in 2015 with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery. Since then, I have enjoyed working in London in private practice, gaining experience in all aspects of general dental care. In January 2018 I decided to travel to New Zealand and settle in windy Wellington!
Outside of work, I love travelling around New Zealand getting to know all the great spots it has. I also love outdoors and all sports: hockey, running, yoga, tennis, mountain biking, you name it!
An interest in health and helping people led me to study a Bachelor of Oral Health degree at the University of Otago, and in 2011 I graduated as a dual qualified dental hygienist and dental therapist. I am passionate about working as an integral part of the dental team at Woodward Dental in helping our patients achieve excellent oral health outcomes.
My goal is to work with my patients to provide thorough dental hygiene treatment and active maintenance of their oral health. This involves an assessment for gingivitis and gum disease (periodontitis), a tailored treatment plan which includes oral health education on best homecare practices; tartar (calculas), plaque and stain removal and disease prevention and stabilisation. I am also able to administer local anaesthetic if needed and am happy to discuss and provide whitening treatments.
Outside of work, I enjoy a passion for photography and film, travelling, and a love for tennis and marathon running.
I have been part of the dental world for the last 12 years. First as a Dental Assistant and now as an Oral Health Therapist. My passion for helping people led me to study at the University of Otago where I graduated in 2012 with a BOH Degree. In my final year at Otago Dental School I was awarded the Annette King award for the highest grade point in dental hygiene and the Hu-Friedy Golden Scaler Award, which symbolizes clinical excellence and compassionate service.
I have been based in Wellington since graduation and have worked with the DHB. The best thing about my job is working closely with my patients to achieve overall health and wellbeing through helping people take care of their mouth. I am a great believer in preventative holistic dentistry and I like to keep myself up to date with the latest research and best practice. It is important to me that my patients feel safe and comfortable during their visit and I will work with them to alleviate any dental fears they may have. Everyone deserves to have a good smile and my goal is to help them get there.
